Lets Explore Comparisons in Poetry 1.

I hope to add a series of posts about the use of rhetorical devices that we use to add imagery to our poetry.

The poet has a whole raft of tools to spice up their poetry a particularly potent mix are the devices of comparison. The senior of which is Metaphor and the others are sub genres of Metaphor.Whilst all work independently all the devices of comparison come via the same genus. With metaphor, simile, synecdoche, metonymy, and personification, we have several formulas of difference that we can use to create rich and interesting effects within a poem. These tools allow us to contrast things in such a way that even though we’re looking for similarities and comparisons, we’re actually also finding the differences. All at the same time.

Coming next an in depth look at Metaphor.
